MojoMMA: Q&A with Demarte "The Wolf" Pena

At EFC Africa 10, he beat Leo Gloss in a five-round war to become the EFC Africa Featherweight Champ. At just 22-years-old! We chatted to Demarte about winning, staying humble and people saying his name wrong…

Demarte Pena

Demarte Pena: Champion

We really like Demarte. For a couple of reasons. Firstly, he’s the consumate athlete. If you follow his Facebook, you’ll see that he’s contantly training, trying to improve and trying to motivate others to make positive changes.

He’s also a really nice guy. Our Gord is the EFC Africa Hexagon Announcer, and Demarte remains the only fighter ever to track him down after a show to say thanks for a rad introduction. Gord thought it was a nice touch.

Demarte’s also a really well-rounded fighter. His striking, wrestling, jiu-jitsu and clinch are all ferocious, and he’s got cardio to give a young Bruce Fordyce a run for his money. We truly believe that, barring injury, this kid could make it all the way to the UFC one day.

Last week, Pena proved his mettle by taking on crowd-favourite “King” Leo Gloss in a five-round war for the then-vacant EFC Africa Featherweight Title. After five grueling rounds, the judges unanimously awarded an exhausted Demarte the belt. The crowd didn’t like it much, largely because Gloss is so popular amongst EFC fans. But we did. ‘Cos we know Demarte. And we think he’s a awesome.

We think you should get to know him too…

They just keep getting better and better. EFC Africa has firmly cemented itself as Africa’s only world-class MMA promotion. And with an established roster of contenders and champions in a wide range of weight-divisions, the flagship brand has definitely come of age.

Fitting, then, that we celebrate the tenth EFC Africa spectacle of courage, skill and bloodshed this week, at Carnival City.

On Thursday September 01, Adam “The Prodigy” Speechly will defend his welterweight title against Dallas Jakobi. And King Leo Gloss will battle Demarte “The Wolf” Pena for the vacant Featherweight Title.

We’ll be there. And we think you should too. So we’ve decided to give away a double-ticket to the event. And, we thought we’d throw in some EFC Africa tees as well. Read on, friend…

MojoMMA: Q&A with Adam "The Prodigy" Speechly

He’s the EFC Africa Welterweight Champion. And, it turns out, a really pleasant dude. We decided to take him for sushi, and talk MMA, EFC 10, and trash-talking in the Hexagon…

Adam Speechly

A nice guy. Who could easily kill you

Adam “The Prodigy” Speechly: He’s almost 23,  studying his Bachelor of Health Sciences (Wits) and he’s got a lethal sense of humour. Oh, and he also happens to be the hardest Welterweight in all of Africa.

With EFC Africa 10 just around the corner, we decided to take him for lunch, and talk about some of the fights on the card, his title-bout with Dallas Jakobi, and why the hell a nice young guy like  him would want to be an MMA fighter. Turns out, he’s a really sweet, humble young dude. And he had us in stitches the whole time. Good oke.

Hard to believe this man could, if he wanted to, leap from his chair, tear each of us into six pieces, and sit back down before his chopsticks even hit the floor. Check out his Q&A, and join us in being unbelievably amped for EFC Africa 10 on September 1st, at Carnival City…

EFC Africa Hexagon Announcer Gord Laws free viagra sample reports back on another majestic night of MMA drama, as seen from the best seat in the house…

Ruan Potts versus Norman Wessels

Ruan Potts versus Norman Wessels: bloody hell!

“It will be remembered as the day that the heavyweights clashed, and a new champion was crowned. I’m gonna probably remember it as the day myself and the commentary crew finally got bled on (we always knew it would happen eventually.) And the day I made a new friend. One who is not only one of the most monstrously awe-inspiring beasts of a man I’ve met, but also a surprisingly sincere, polite, awesome dude.

Ruan “Fangzz” Potts is your new EFC Africa Heavyweight Champion. And to take the title, he had to go through Norman “Chef” Wessels. And there can be no tougher route than that.

Once again, I was privileged to watch the whole thing unfold from right up against the cage, with brief missions into the Hexagon to shout about the whole affair. This is how EFC 09 looked from inside the Hexagon…”

The View From the Hexagon: EFC Africa 08

EFC Africa 08

EFC Africa 08

The clock on the massive screen counts down. Fans hurriedly take their seats as the final seconds tick away. The speakers explode into a cacophony of awesomeness as the introductory videos burst into life on female viagra australia the big screens. No one notices that a suited-up dude is hurrying into position in the middle of the Hexagon. As the lights turn back on, the cage is empty, except  for our man…

With mic in hand, he belows, Bruce Buffer-like, “Ladies and gentlemen, we are live!” And then it’s on! It’s EFC Africa 08, and tonight, our Gord has the honour of declaring three new EFC Africa Champions, amidst twelve bouts that catapulted the EFC Africa brand from plain old awesome, to utterly spectacular!

MojoMMA talks training, fighting and winning with Richie Quan!

Richie Quan kicking ass. Actually, midsection...

FightFit Militia already hold the EFC Africa Heavyweight title, which rests around the mid-section of Norman “Chef” Wessels. On Thursday, they may well see two more champions arise from their stable in the form of middleweight-contender Garreth “Soldier Boy” McLellan and lightweight megaforce Costa Ioannou. Both will clash at EFC Africa 08, against Jacques Joubert and Wentzel Nel, respectively.

But behind all the champions and contenders who proudly hail from FightFit Militia’s gym, stands one man. And that man is Richard Quan. An accomplished Muay Thai fighter, undefeated MMA pro (7-0) and trainer to both the world’s elite soldiers and fighters, there is much wisdom behind Quan’s methods. And the results speak for themselves.

We asked Richie to chat to us about the sport that he lives for. He was more than happy to oblige…
